"Over the years, I've owned packable down and synthetic jackets from other brands, but this is hands down my favorite. It's incredibly soft and light, packs down easily, and has become my go-to jacket for every occasion (casual around town, or on cold hikes). It's neither too boxy or too fitted, and the cuffs fit well over bulkier fleeces and sweaters (previous jackets have been too tapered in the arms). Highly, highly recommend this jacket!!"

“New favorite jacket! I read the reviews on this jacket before purchasing and will agree with what everyone else is saying. It is a light weight, non bulky, warm jacket. I have tested it down to 5 to 10 degrees F and have been plenty comfortable. The stretch material is great, giving improved articulation. Better than any coat I’ve owned in the past.”

“Bottom line up front, this is an amazing vest at an amazing price. I tried other brands (Patagonia, REI, North Face) and the Mountain Hardware Vest was the best fitting and most functional (warmth, pockets, fit). I highly recommend this vest!”

what is down?
You might think that down is just feathers, but it’s actually something a little different. By definition, down is the plumage that’s found underneath the exterior feathers on waterfowl, consisting of soft, fluffy filaments. The down cluster itself is a Beta Keratin which is a protein extremely similar to the composition of our hair, which is why it requires special care and treatment to keep it clean and in good condition.
fill power
Fill power is a number that indicates the relative quality of down. It measures how many cubic inches of loft that down produces by filling a large cylinder with one ounce and placing a weighted disk at the top, compressing it down. After one minute, the volume of down compressed at that point is calculated. (For example: 600 cubic inches of down = 600-fill-power.) Higher fill power numbers indicate greater loft and insulating efficiency—not how warm it is.

AND WHAT TO CONSIDER WHILE SHOPPING

warm
The key to down’s warmth is the formation of small air pockets within its interlocking and overlapping strands. These spaces hold still air that help maintain consistent warmth on the inside while blocking cold air from entering. Shell material and added layering over or underneath your down jacket also figures into how warm you will feel: that’s where our design variety comes in. If you’re looking for something with extra heat-trapping potential, pay close attention to fit and fabric factors as well.
durable
Sourced from Allied Feather & Down, the down used in our jackets undergoes a diligent and environmentally safe cleaning process to ensure it lasts longer. This process involves multiple washes in biodegradable detergent and recycled water, as well as thorough drying and de-dusting. We then utilize a range of durable shell fabrics from ultralight ripstop to Pertex® Diamond Fuse to our innovative stretch-woven material set used in the Stretchdown™ family.

lightweight
More resilient down compresses less and will loft higher. So, if you’re trying to reduce weight and bulk, a jacket with higher fill-power is the right direction. But, if you can afford the extra ounces and have room in your pack to spare, you might choose a lower fill-power down jacket.
breathable
Down insulation breathes efficiently, actively wicking away perspiration as you move, so you don’t get that feeling of clamminess throughout activity. Higher breathability relies on a shell with advanced technology such as Pertex® Quantum Air that allows for higher air permeability.

packable
Down’s ability to compress into a small, packable shape and then puff back up later is one of the reasons you might choose one of these jackets over a synthetic alternative. Higher quality down recovers better after compression and fluffs back up to create more loft and provide more heat-trapping air space.
